When we think about business challenges, we often think of external pressures—competition, budgets, deadlines, leadership demands. But for many midlife women, one of the greatest barriers to performance comes from within: perimenopause.
Brain fog before a presentation. Fatigue during long strategy sessions. Mood swings in high-pressure negotiations. Night sweats leaving you exhausted before the day even begins. These aren’t just “personal problems”—they spill directly into the boardroom, the office, and the way women show up in their careers.
And yet, most workplaces don’t even acknowledge it.
Women Already Face a Steeper Climb
Even before hormones enter the conversation, the path to leadership is steeper for women.
- Only 22.3% of CEOs in Australia are women.
- Women hold just 32.5% of key management roles, and only 18% of board chair positions.
- In ASX-listed companies, 91% of CEO roles are held by men, and 82% of the pipeline roles (like CFO/COO) are also dominated by men.
These numbers highlight a reality: women are already competing against structural barriers in business and leadership. Add the chaos of hormonal shifts, and it becomes even harder to show up with clarity, confidence, and resilience.
Why Perimenopause Matters at Work
Perimenopause is not just a health stage—it’s a workplace issue. Hormonal fluctuations impact:
- Cognitive function → brain fog, poor concentration, forgetfulness
- Mood regulation → anxiety, irritability, or even rage outbursts
- Sleep quality → 3am wake-ups, night sweats, restless nights
- Energy levels → fatigue, sluggish mornings, 3pm crashes
These symptoms don’t just affect women individually. They affect entire teams, organisations, and leadership pipelines. A tired, foggy, anxious leader can’t make the same impact as one who feels focused, calm, and capable.
The Business Case for Hormonal Health
Workplaces invest in leadership training, coaching, and professional development—but if hormone health isn’t part of the conversation, half the picture is missing.
Healthier women in leadership means:
- Sharper decision-making
- More consistent performance
- Reduced burnout
- Stronger emotional intelligence
- Higher retention in leadership roles
When women thrive physically, they thrive professionally.
What You Can Do to Reduce Symptoms
The good news? You don’t have to accept hormonal chaos as your “new normal.” With the right strategies, you can reclaim control and show up stronger in every area of your life—including your career.
Here are five proven steps to reduce symptoms and build career resilience:
- Balance Blood Sugar
- Start the day with protein and fibre to stabilise energy.
- Avoid long gaps between meals—skipping lunch = 3pm crash.
- Manage Stress Proactively
- Cortisol and oestrogen work against each other.
- Try short breathwork breaks, walking meetings, or journaling to reset.
- Prioritise Restful Sleep
- Set a wind-down routine: dim lights, cut screens, keep your room cool.
- Support sleep hormones with magnesium-rich foods or calming teas.
- Train Smarter, Not Harder
- Strength training builds muscle, boosts metabolism, and improves confidence.
- Pair it with low-impact movement like walking or swimming for recovery.
- Stay Hydrated
- Dehydration amplifies fatigue and brain fog. Aim for 2–3 litres daily.
You Don’t Have to Choose Between Health and Career
I know firsthand how hormones can cloud judgment. In 2023, when I closed my first business, I thought it was purely due to stress. Looking back, I realise it was the chaos of perimenopause that made everything feel impossible.
That’s why I now dedicate my work to helping women calm the chaos and thrive—personally and professionally.
Because here’s the truth: you don’t have to choose between health and career. You can have both.
Next Step: The M.E.N.O. Queen Program
That’s why I created the M.E.N.O. Queen Program—a 12-week online coaching program for women navigating perimenopause and menopause who want to feel strong, confident, and capable again.
It combines the five pillars of hormonal health—nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress management, and hydration—with ongoing accountability and support. The result? A roadmap that allows you to show up with clarity, energy, and presence in both your career and your life.
