For a long time, before I studied Mindset Coaching, Christmas made me anxious.
Not because of the people.
Not because of the celebrations.
But because of the food.
I used to swing between two extremes —
Trying to be “good” and controlled…
Or throwing my hands up and thinking, “Stuff it, I’ll start again in January.”
And the guilt?
It always followed.
What I didn’t understand back then was this:
Christmas food wasn’t the problem. My mindset was.
So many women I work with in perimenopause get anxious about the same thing.
They want to enjoy the season… but also don’t want to undo their progress.
And somewhere in between, guilt creeps in.
Here’s what I know now — and what I teach my clients every year.
You don’t need restriction.
You don’t need unrealistic rules.
And you definitely don’t need guilt.
You need permission and balance.
Christmas isn’t an everyday event.
It’s a short season of connection, celebration and joy.
And balance looks like this:
- Eating in line with your goals during the meals you can control
- Enjoying festive food when you’re in fun company
- Being present instead of distracted by food thoughts
- Letting joy and connection matter more than perfection
Because here’s the part most women don’t realise:
Food has no moral value.
Food is not illegal.
Therefore, there is no place for guilt.
And, guilt creates stress.
Stress drives cortisol.
Cortisol impacts mood, anxiety, energy and fat storage.
Which means guilt actively works against you.
I learned that the hard way.
The year I stopped moralising food…
Stopped “being good” or “being bad”…
Was the year Christmas became brighter for me.
Food became food.
Not a test of willpower.
Not a reflection of my worth.
And that shift didn’t just change my Christmas —
It changed my relationship with my body.
So, if you take nothing else from this, take this:
You don’t lose results over Christmas.
You lose results when you mentally disconnect from yourself.
This year, stay connected.
Choose balance.
Drop the guilt.
And enjoy the season for what it actually is — a moment in time, not a mistake.
